Yet another experiment…. forums…

Sep 1, 2004 1 min.

I need authentication and role based security for another project that is coming soon, so I’ve put forums up at http://www.duncanmackenzie.net/forums/ … nothing there at the moment, but feel free to visit the ‘discussion’ forum and contribute your ideas… What forums should I add? I was thinking one per article I write (for ongoing discussion) but what else? There are lots of forums in the world, is there something missing that could exist…

Seems installing the new Community Server :: Forums isn’t as ‘isolated’ as its documentation claims…

Ok, so any action you take against your database is your own responsibility… so this is my fault, but I’m still miffed. I installed the new drop of the Forums code from Rob Howard and co… and one of the various bits of information I picked up from the support forum and the docs was that I could happily install this onto an existing database because (quoting from the readme here)… “All the objects in the Forums product use the forums_ prefix so there shouldn’t be any problem” .

Major revamp of the VB Community page up…

Ok, so here’s the scoop… Robert Green, the Visual Basic PM focused on Community, is going to be in charge of the /community portion of the VB developer center on MSDN from now on… updating it, designing it, blogging about it, etc…. What does this mean? Well, for one thing it means a big change in content today, but it also means much more frequent updates and a ton of VB community information available from one place.

Ok… this is very cool, hosting your own instance of VS’s code editor?

Dr. Ex(tensibility) posted this recently; Deploying Managed Packages and Hosting Code Editor in Tool Windows First things first…. this should have been two blog entries… because it is way too long for one, and because the two topics are not related… so here I end up, interested only in the hosting of code editors, and I have to link to that other stuff as well… but I digress… 🙂

That blog moving tool…

A few people asked about the code for that tool described in my first post on this new site, and I just wanted to reassure anyone who was interested that I would be posting the code soon… I actually ran into a couple of minor bugs in the transfer that I’d like to fix (or at least document) before I put up the code..

Ok… so suddenly Avalon seems relevant to me :)

With the recent annoucements, I get to check something off of my personal wishlist…. Avalon (and some connected systems thing… “purple” I think it’s called…) will be available on WinXP!! I mean, Longhorn seems cool and all… but I just wasn’t all that interested in a UI technology that wouldn’t run on anything but the very latest OS, especially considering the very wide deployment of XP that will exist by the time Longhorn ships.

Ran into my first blog hosting bug… that was fast…

Within a few hours of being up, I ran into this issue... odd, since it doesn’t appear to be affecting very many folks… .Text Threading Bug ...If you are one of the 7 regular readers here you might have noticed some problems over the last few weeks. Every so often .Text would display an error page with the message: “Value cannot be null. Parameter name: value”. Once the error happened it would stick around until the application restarted.

First post on the new site…

Last night, I wrote up a little Visual Basic .NET app that uses the .Text web services and moved all my categories and posts to [a new .Text server]()… From this point on, I plan to post only to the new site, assuming it is all working as expected!
