What will they think of us?

Posted on January 31st

Kent blogs about the Name Registry that was sent up with the launch to Pluto... If only Futurama was still on, they'd do a good job of writing the 'what if' story about this one.

Cool utility, if you need to know how much drive space you have...

Posted on January 29th

From the "Guys with Towels" blog, which is a very funny site in general, comes a drive space utility. Like most of us, Tim has written this application when he probably should have been working :) Full Size View: Compact View: […]

Yay! I have an Xbox 360!!

Posted on January 29th

Ok, you'll be glad to hear that I won't be whining any more about not having an Xbox 360. My pre-order from EB Games still hasn't come in, but a friend of mine knew someone who had waited in line to get a 360 on launch day and then had their pre-order come in... so they were willing to sell me their […]

Major Nelson asks the community for their favorite Xbox 360 tips...

Posted on January 25th

Looking for tips for your new Xbox 360? Check out the over 300 comments to Major Nelson's post, not all of them are useful, but there are lots of great bits of information in there. […]

Book spotting...

Posted on January 23rd

Our new book, Xbox 360 for Dummies, has hit the stores... or so we've heard. So far, Brian and I haven't seen it in any actual retail stores, just online. If you see it in a store near you, or better yet... if you buy it in a store near you... let me know! […]

Anyone looking for invites into Windows Live Messenger Beta?

Posted on January 22nd

If so, just use the contact link to send me a note (with your email)... I only have 4 invites, but I bet they'll just keep giving them to me so I'll try to get to folks on a 1st come 1st served basis....

I'm thinking of putting MSN Search onto my site(s)

Posted on January 20th

With their SDK, search results as RSS, and ability to limit searches by site (so you can do queries like MSDN site:duncanmackenzie.net), I think I'll be able to provide a nice little 'cross property' search for my blog and my personal site. Replacing the google search box on my site isn't a big prio […]

IIS Admin is a great tool if you do web development on a Windows XP machine

Posted on January 19th

I run Windows Server 2003 as my dev server at work, so I'm used to having the ability to run multiple web sites (main branch on 80, debug build on 88, another project on 8080, etc... ) in fact, I'm not just used to it... I'm spoiled by it. I don't like developing or debugging in a vroot, when I know […]

Ah the web, it can change so quickly...

Posted on January 17th

Yesterday I posted about the use of the feed icon on Media Center Sandbox and suggested a few changes. Last night, I get an email from Charlie Owen, one of the principals of the sandbox site, and the site is completely updated. Now, I don't know if I caused any change or if the change was just in th […]

Nice to see other folks using the firefox/IE7 feed icon on their sites...

Posted on January 16th

Found the Media Center Sandbox today, via Erik Porter, and it is nice to see them using the newly blessed icon. I'd suggest they use a smaller one though, and update the feed icon next to their blogroll to be consistent... but otherwise its great :) […]

Our book has shipped!!!

Posted on January 13th

I just heard that our book, XBox 360 4 Dummies, has left the printer.... hopefully it will end up on bookshelves near you soon

Last day at MSDN...

Posted on January 13th

Earlier I annouced that I was leaving MSDN, and my last day has arrived. I'm pretty excited about starting with the Channel 9 team next week though, my office here is empty and I'll be returning my MSDN machines today. Luckily for me, for the purposes of copying my old files over, I already have my […]

Doh! ... DOA4

Posted on January 12th

More reason to feel bad about not having a Xbox 360 yet... my brother bought me DOA4 for Christmas, for the 360, and it just arrived yesterday. I haven't opened it yet, but I put it up on top of the TV and pretended I was playing it, using the most powerful gaming console of them all... my imaginati […]

Implicit relationship between search crawler and content providers...

Posted on January 11th

A discussion at work today, along with my earlier post about Phil's issues with Google and MSN, had me searching like crazy for this comment: […]

Term Extraction

Posted on January 10th

I was playing around with Yahoo's term extraction service, as a possible path to tagging (this is the same service used behind TagCloud.com, for example), and I created this C# class libary with a sample app written in Windows Forms. […]

Cyclical reference, blog style...

Posted on January 9th

Not to cause any form of infinite loop here, but I liked this comment from Betsy in her post about my post... It's a great fit - Duncan went from content strategy to development at MSDN most recently, and now he's going to be on the dev team of one of the most evangelical of teams. Nice to kno […]

Ok, I'm really starting to feel bad about not having an Xbox 360 yet...

Posted on January 9th

My book is about to come out (don't worry, I had a 360 to use while writing the book... so my lack of one now does not reduce the accuracy of the book :) ), and I work at a place with probably one of the world's highest concentration of Xbox 360 fans .... and I don't have one yet. I pre-ordered from […]

Phil Ringnalda questions the value of letting Google and MSN index his pages...

Posted on January 9th

I love this... and the funny thing was, I had just finished searching MSN for "Phil Ringnalda" (because I had forgotten his URL, well actually because I kept spelling his name wrong when I typed it as a URL) without much success. […]

Turns out the VS 'read me' authors have a sense of humour...

What's the difference between start.com and Live.com?

Audible.com, one of the few free offers I signed up for that I'm still using...

Posted on January 5th

Along with Zooba.com, I've kept my Audible membership as well... (and Columbia House DVD and BMG Music ... oh, and Vonage... ok, there are quite a few free offers that I ended up keeping!!). Audible is pretty handy for those of us who have the occasional long driving trip, I burned 'Getting things d […]

Have you tried my RSS editor? Comments?

Posted on January 4th

Ok, so I'm fishing for comments... not compliments at least, but I'm still fishing... I've seen a fair bit of traffic to the install point but not a single email or blog comment about this app... go ahead fire away (and yes, I know that it doesn't do Atom feeds... yet). […]

Interested in building your own Gadgets for Live.com?

Posted on January 4th

Ok, so I must admit that the whole Live.com/Start.com thing looks so much like a "Digital Dashboard" (anyone else get into that fad when it was cool?) that I feel like I'm back working on building my own components into the Outlook Today page.... but cynicism aside, it is still a cool idea and the v […]
